American librarian Melvil Dewey is the one we have to thank for creating the Dewey Decimal Classification system that is used in most public and school libraries. Trivia buffs: Dewey is also known for the creation of hanging vertical files, which were first introduced at the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago.
